EVENTS ORGANIZERS

The Annual Scientific Meeting is organized by the Association for Poultry Medicine and Health (AMSA) and the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca, under the scientific endorsement of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Sciences (ECPVS).

GENERAL INFORMATION AND VENUE

Venue

The conference is hosted in the main campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca (USAMV), Romania. The campus is located on Calea Mănăștur street, no. 3–5, right across from the Platinia shopping center, very close to the city center. Our campus is spacious and full of greenery, we hope for good weather so you can fully enjoy the conference experience in Cluj.

Travel Information

Getting to Cluj-Napoca

Air travel

The nearest airports are:

  • Cluj-Napoca International Airport (CLJ) – approximately 10 km from the University.
  • Transylvania Airport Targu Mures (TGM) – approximately 115 km from the University.

Participants travelling from other European countries have a large range of alternative choices, flying directly from London-Luton, Paris, Rome, Munchen, Koln, Wien,etc. to Cluj Napoca or via Bucharest. Many airlines have flights connecting Cluj-Napoca, e.g. TAROM, Lufthansa, Wizzair, Blue Air. For information about flight schedules, please search www.tarom.ro or www.wizzair.com or www.lufthansa.de

For non-European participants, the best choice is to fly to Bucharest Otopeni and then on to Cluj.

Arrival at Cluj Avram Iancu international airport

The airport is situated about 8 km from city center, which can be reached only by road (buses and taxis are available, taking about 15 minutes to reach the center). To reach the city center:

–> Taxis are available any time (about 6-8 EURO). https://www.airportcluj.ro/transport-si-acces/companii-taxi/ or you can book a trip via Bolt or Uber. Bolt is very popular in Cluj!

The payment is recommended to be made in the official Romanian currency – Ron (1 EURO = about 5 Ron). Currency exchange offices are available in the airport.

–> Buses: There is a special line (A1E) from the airport to the city center. You can find the timetable here: A1E Line Timetable.

Another option is the trolleybus no. 5. More details are available here: Transport Public. The ticket price is 6 RON (1.2 Euros). Bus tickets can be purchased directly from the bus using an electronic machine. Please note that tickets are not printed; the proof of purchase is your payment confirmation !

By train

  • Cluj-Napoca train station is in the heart of Cluj, approximately 4 km on foot to the University (a 30-40 minute walk).
  • The Cluj-Napoca railway station has services to major cities in Romania (Bucharest or Timisoara, Sibiu). For details about train schedules, see http://www.cfrcalatori.ro/

Arrival by car

Cluj-Napoca is connected to western European countries via Hungary by European road E60 and highways. Travel times are about 9 hours from Vienna and about 6 hours from Budapest.


Meet our speakers

Prof. Sjaak de Wit

A leading expert in poultry health and infectious diseases, Prof. de Wit is a researcher at Royal GD (Deventer), Dipl. ECPVS, and President of the World Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA). He graduated as a veterinarian from Utrecht University in 1989 and earned his PhD in 1997, focusing on the diagnosis and transmission of infectious bronchitis virus.
As an immunologist and senior researcher at Royal GD, his work spans serological test quality and accreditation, diagnostic development, applied research, and on-site consultancy for poultry farms, hatcheries, and integrations. In 2016, he became President of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science.
 

Prof. Jeroen Dewulf

Prof. Jeroen Dewulf is a Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology at University of Gent and a leading European expert in disease prevention through biosecurity in animal production. His work focuses on implementing practical biosecurity measures in livestock and poultry systems to reduce infectious disease risk and limit antimicrobial use. He is widely recognized for his scientific contributions and publications on biosecurity and veterinary public health.

 

Prof. Mattia Cecchinato

Prof. Mattia Cecchinato, DVM, PhD is Full Professor at the University of Padua and a De Facto member of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science (since 2013). His research focuses on avian viral diseases, particularly Avian Metapneumovirus (AMPV) and Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV), with expertise in epidemiology, molecular characterization, diagnostics, and vaccine studies.
He has authored over 260 publications (85 peer-reviewed papers; h-index 18; 967 citations, Scopus), is Principal Investigator of numerous funded research projects, and co-inventor of an Italian patent on cross-protection prediction between IBV strains.
He currently serves as President of the Italian Section of the World Veterinary Poultry Association (SIPA) and Coordinator of the PhD Program in Veterinary Sciences at the University of Padua.
 

Prof. Damer Blake

Prof. Damer Blake graduated in Animal Science from Wye College (University of London) and obtained his PhD in Bacterial Genetics from the University of Aberdeen. He began his research career at the Institute for Animal Health (UK), focusing on avian coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species, contributing to genome sequencing, molecular diagnostics, and vaccine development.
Since 2010, he has been based at the Royal Veterinary College, where he became Professor in 2016. He is Editor-in-Chief of Avian Pathology and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Veterinary Poultry Association.
 

Program

This practical workshop will focus on essential techniques used in avian pathology diagnostics. Participants will learn the correct necropsy technique in poultry, including systematic examination of organs and identification of major pathological changes. The workshop will also cover proper sample collection for laboratory diagnostics and the lesion scoring system used in coccidiosis, with emphasis on practical application in field and research settings.

Acest workshop practic va aborda tehnici esențiale utilizate în diagnosticul de patologie aviară. Participanții vor învăța tehnica corectă de efectuare a necropsiei la păsări, inclusiv examinarea sistematică a organelor și identificarea principalelor modificări patologice. De asemenea, vor fi prezentate metodele corecte de recoltare a probelor pentru diagnosticul de laborator și sistemul de scor lezional utilizat în coccidioză, cu accent pe aplicarea practică în teren și în cercetare.
